Programme specification

This programme offers students the possibility to explore the interplay between languages, cultures, and
societies, with a strong emphasis on intercultural communication, critical thinking, and a broad range of
transferable skills. While students focus on one language and the cultures and societies where it is used, they will
also have the opportunity to engage with cultures and societies across the globe. Through this breadth, students
develop the ability to interpret, analyse, and engage with different perspectives, diversifying their skillset for an
interconnected and dynamic world.
From the outset, students are introduced to a range of skills that they will develop throughout the course. At Level 1, they begin to explore the cultural and historical contexts of the language that they study and develop foundational communication and transferable skills. Assessment at this stage is varied and inclusive, combining written coursework, oral presentations, and language-based tasks that encourage reflection on cultural values and social norms. At Level 2, students continue to develop their language skills while deepening their understanding of the societies where the language is spoken and critically engaging with cultural forms such as literature, film, and digital media. They also begin to work more independently, applying analytical approaches to a broader range of topics. Assessment methods reflect this growing autonomy and include essays, commentaries, group projects, and the creation of digital artefacts such as podcasts, allowing students to demonstrate their ability to communicate complex ideas across different media. At Level 3, students undertake a major independent research project, which allows them to consolidate the intercultural, analytical, and digital skills developed throughout the programme. This Final Year Project provides them with the opportunity to explore a topic of personal interest in depth, drawing on a range of sources and perspectives. Alongside the project, students continue to engage with diverse forms of assessment, including essays, presentations, and creative outputs, which support critical evaluation of cultural, societal, and historical dynamics. While all compulsory assessments are submitted in English, students may have the opportunity to engage with materials and tasks in the target language. Graduates are equipped with the cognitive flexibility, intercultural awareness, and communication skills required to understand and contribute to today’s diverse and globally connected cultures and societies.
