Module summary

This module aims to develop students’ language skills to an advanced level, achieving the communicative competence of an advanced speaker (C1-C2 levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Language). Students will explore the details of German language through authentic sources and topics regarding current affairs of the German-speaking world, while practicing oral and written skills in a range of situations.

Objectives

This module aims to:
- further consolidate students’ German language skills in all the four abilities (speaking, listening, reading and writing) to an advanced level (corresponding to the C level of the CEFR)
- develop students’ skills in using academic and specialised German including subject-specific vocabulary and advanced phrasing
- build familiarity with different language-specific textual types and genres
- debate current affairs and discourses in German-speaking countries
- prepare students for using their German language skills in a professional context

Learning outcomes

By the end of this module students should be able to:

1. Understand a wide range of complex texts on advanced topics, appraising the implications for the German speaking world
2. Use German flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes
3. Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text in German on complex subjects
4. Develop a structured and sustained argument that is evidence-based and informed by relevant debates
5. Communicate persuasively and professionally to an audience using technical terminology and concepts, using the appropriate language register
