Catalan B1 level (CEFR) (either pre-requisite qualification or pre-requisite module)
| SPPO2595 | Catalan Language II |
This module is approved as a discovery module
This module aims to develop your linguistic competence in Catalan to an upper-intermediate (CEFR B2) standard. By the end of the module, students will be able to understand extended spoken Catalan (such as news reports, podcasts, interviews, discussions and audiovisual materials), and identify key ideas, detailed information and implied meanings. Students will also be able to engage in conversations with a high degree of fluency and spontaneity, expressing viewpoints, arguments and evaluations clearly and effectively. In addition, the module will enable students to read and interpret a wide variety of texts, including journalistic, literary and cultural sources, and write clear and detailed texts on a range of topics with good command of complex grammatical structures. At the same time, the module builds on and expands the cultural knowledge gained at earlier levels, exploring key aspects of Catalan history, identity, literature, film, multilingualism and contemporary society. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.
This module aims to strengthen and extend the linguistic structures and communicative strategies acquired at B1 level. Students will gain greater autonomy in spoken and written communication in the following areas (aligned with Common European Framework for Languages B2). Students will practise the four core skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) through practical, interactive activities. By the end of the module, they should be able to express themselves confidently and coherently in Catalan. At the same time, the module deepens their understanding of Catalan culture, building on the foundations laid in earlier language and culture modules.
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Produce clear, detailed and well-organised spoken discourse to express opinions, arguments, and evaluations
2. Understand extended speech on complex topics in oral Catalan with a degree of fluency
3. Understand and analyse a variety of written Catalan texts, identifying viewpoints and cultural references
4. Produce clear, detailed and coherent written texts in Catalan using a wide range of grammatical structures with a good degree of accuracy
5. Identify and evaluate key aspects of Catalan history, society, identity and cultural production.
6. Communicate effectively adapting your communication strategy and style to different communication contexts, media and audiences
