Module summary

This module is aimed at students who already have a solid foundation in Portuguese language (at least CEFR level B2). Students will focus on consolidating and extending their grammatical competence and accuracy in both spoken and written Portuguese, while developing advanced listening and reading skills in line with CEFR level C1-C2. Students will also engage in reflection on language use and practise applying Portuguese in formal and professional settings. The module explores a range of social and cultural themes that provide insight into the Portuguese-speaking world.

Objectives

This module aims to consolidate and further develop students’ Portuguese language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, focussing in particular on grammar in context and the usage of grammar in authentic communicative situations according to different contexts and registers, enhancing students’ language awareness. The aims and objectives will be achieved through the provision of weekly languages classes targeted at linguistic accuracy and fluency, and by engaging students with authentic Portuguese-language materials that engage culturally relevant topics in the Portuguese-speaking world.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject: 1. Express themselves in Portuguese clearly and coherently in oral form, using the terminology and language register that are appropriate to the communicative context, including academic and professional ones 2. Demonstrate understanding of a wide range of complex written texts in Portuguese, including academic and professional ones 4. Demonstrate understanding of extended spoken discourses on complex topics in Portuguese, including academic and professional ones. 5. Critically evaluate and synthesise information from a wide range of sources and debates 6. Develop a well-structured and sustained argument and be able to communicate persuasively and professionally to an audience using technical terminology and concepts, using appropriate register.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Written and oral feedback will be given regularly to students to identify and address any difficulties at an early stage: · Students will receive formative feedback from the tutor of their oral and written production during language classes. · Students will receive formative feedback from the tutor on written tasks set as homework. · Students will have some self-assessed homework, which will be set by the tutor. Answers for those pieces of homework will be available on Minerva. Students will receive written feedback on all pieces of assessed work.
