This module is not approved as a discovery module
In this module, entirely taught in Spanish, students will acquire advanced linguistic and intercultural competence in business and economic contexts, which will set them apart as credible and nuanced professionals working in international contexts. This module also gives students the opportunity to explore how public debates on issues such as economic development, privatisation and nationalisation, and free trade shape how our societies imagine prosperity, fairness and power, and how we justify the ideologies and policy choices that transform everyday life. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.
The aim of the module, where no prior knowledge of economics or business is necessary, is to equip students, as advanced users of Spanish language and global citizens, to engage critically and professionally with key business and economic aspects of the cultures and societies of Spanish-speaking countries.
This is achieved by developing students’ command of specialised vocabulary, discourse conventions, and genre awareness at C1–C2 level, alongside an accessible but rigorous introduction to relevant contemporary business and economics topics, challenges, and opportunities that will inspire students’ professional and intellectual curiosity.
The module is structured around guided analysis of authentic press, policy, and corporate materials, with task-based learning in the classroom supported by structured automated individual exercises and team-preparation activities outside the classroom.
Students apply concepts and language through collaborative activities and simulations of professional scenarios, as well interpreting, evaluating and discussing Spanish-language economic and business topics.
Independent learning is additionally supported through optional Spanish-language LinkedIn Learning courses, enabling students to develop specific sectoral interests and extend their engagement with topics of personal and professional relevance.
This design supports the production of coherent and interactive spoken and written outputs by the students, ultimately leading to developing a practical command of the language in those contexts, as well as a critically informed, yet professionally oriented understanding of the economic cultures and business opportunities within Spanish-speaking countries.
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Interpret and evaluate authentic Spanish-language economic and business materials
2. Analyse and discuss critically contemporary issues in Spanish and Latin-American economies
3. Apply evidence-based solutions to practical business tasks
4. Produce interculturally effective communication in Spanish to C1–C2 level in economic and business contexts
5. Assess opportunities to create economic and/or social value
6. Plan and deliver task-based outputs to professional standards
