Year running 2026/27
Successful completion of Level 2 French (FREN2010 or FREN2017).
This module is not approved as a discovery module
This module aims to develop French language skills at Level C (Proficiency) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which is the highest level described in this internationally recognised framework. This module enhances students’ ability to write and to speak structured, grammatical French, to summarise materials and to express themselves fluently and spontaneously for professional and academic purposes.
Regular written and oral language classes will develop the range of skills required to obtain CEFR level C: workshops focus on the precise use of language, for example through close study of particular points of grammar; written language and conversation classes apply the language through more extended exercises, practising receptive skills in both written and spoken forms, and extended productive skills through exercises such as formal presentation, summary and discussion. On completion of this module, students will have achieved a high degree of competence in receptive and productive skills in a range of registers of French.
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
LO1. Demonstrate advanced understanding of complex French texts
LO2. Express themselves fluently and spontaneously in spoken French
LO3. Produce clear, well-structured, detailed texts in French on complex subjects
LO4. Compose and deliver a pertinent response to a question, taking into account the purpose and audience
LO5. Formulate ideas supported by evidence and sound reasoning
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- express themselves fluently and accurately in French;
- communicate orally in French effectively and at an advanced level demonstrating awareness and use of register and vocabulary appropriate to the context, and awareness of French society and culture;
- prepare, deliver and discuss a short oral exposé in French;
- identify, interpret and use complex grammatical and syntactical patterns in French;
- produce a summary in French of a French journalistic text.
