Programme specification

This programme will provide linguists, from the UK and abroad, who meet the entry requirements of the programme, with the opportunity to develop the skills of professional interpreting and translating and consolidate these skills by acquiring familiarity with a wide range of issues in the field of international affairs, politics, international business and science and technology.

Such training will enable graduates to apply the skills gained at the highest level in major international, governmental and non-governmental organisations as well as in commerce, diplomacy, industry and the academic world.

Intensive ‘hands-on’ teaching of interpreting is geared to international practice and includes a high level of participation of practicing professional conference interpreters.

Interpreting classes take place in state-of-the-art interpreting suites housed within the Language Centre, and simulated conferences in this suite comprise a major part of the training offered to students, enabling them to experience an environment as close as possible to that which they will be working in the future.

Our interpreting programmes are recognised by the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) and enjoy close ties with the UN (Geneva, Vienna) as well as the EU. We are regulated by a Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Leeds and the Directorate General for Interpretation and Conferences of the European Parliament in recognition of the excellence in the training of conference interpreters.

Key features:
- Research-led and specialised Conference Interpreting training
- Intensive ‘hands-on’ teaching of interpreting geared to domestic and international practices
- Market-oriented training with high level of participation of practicing professional interpreters and translators
- Practice in both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting
- Training in real life scenarios and mock conferences
- Practice in state of the art interpreting conference suites, translation labs and language lab
- Opportunity to take part in a study visit to the European Parliament / European Commission in Brussels or to the UN (Vienna or Geneva or IMO). The aim of the visits is to familiarize trainee interpreters with the work of professional conference interpreters and let them try their simultaneous skills in the booths.
- Close contact with various industry partners through the “CTS Professionalisation Talks” series
