Module summary

This practice module will ensure that students develop high-level translation and revision skills. In doing so, students are fully prepared for a successful career in the translation and localisation industry. The module offers students practice-based training in a variety of different text types in two different domains: Creative Translation (Block 1) and Technical Translation (Block 2). The module is taught in groups for the first language direction

Objectives

The objectives of the module are to provide students with specialised translation skills and critical application of translation approaches and theory develop skills in translation, revision/post-editing and source text analysis and experience the roles of translator and revisor/post-editor

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject, so that the students can:
LO1 Translate confidently to a professional level in a variety of text types and two key domains;
LO2 Analyse the source text in relation to genre, function, publication outlet and audience;
LO3 Critically select the most adequate translation strategies, resources, and tools in regard to genre and function, publication outlet and requirements of the target audience.

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
LO4. Demonstrate reflection and critical thinking to understand priorities for making translation decisions.
LO5. Apply translation productivity tools in practice.
LO6. Demonstrate creativity in problem solving and time management.
LO7. Improve knowledge of source and target language.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will receive regular feedback throughout the module. This will include: - oral feedback from tutor and other students provided when discussing translation choices and alternative options in seminars - written peer-feedback when completing translation and revision homework assignments - written feedback provided by the tutor in homework assignments
