The programme targets a skills gap in the textile and fashion industry that requires individuals to possess a good knowledge of textile technology as an enabler for innovation and sustainability. BSc Textile Innovation and Sustainability provides students with technical knowledge with regards to the textile manufacturing processes. While doing so, students will develop active awareness of sustainability issues and possible technical approaches, as well as an understanding of the innovation process.
The course is structured to provide a breadth of knowledge in a progressive development from Level 1 to Level 3, across all key areas of textile technology, innovation and sustainability. This organically follows the path of textile materials from fibres and polymers all the way into textile, fashion and industrial products, with key innovation opportunities and sustainable interventions contextualised throughout the material and process journey.
- In the first year, through core modules, students will grasp a wide understanding of the textile industry and its relationship with sustainability. In addition, students will be introduced to the basics of good academic research skills, as well as methods of subject-specific research.
- At Level 2, students will deepen their understanding of how the industry functions, always being conscious of how sustainability is impacted. Furthermore, students learn vital research methodologies, tools and analysis skills.
Between Levels 2 and 3 suitably qualified students may have the opportunity to extend their studies by taking a study year abroad at an appropriate European or International University, or opt to take a work placement in the cultural industries.
- During their final year, students will engage in further core modules to consolidate their industry knowledge. In addition, the development of students’ autonomous practice and research is promoted through self-directed and self-initiated study: students will be required to produce a textile innovation and/or sustainability-based independent study.
At each level students will choose to study subjects from a range of optional modules from within the School or discovery modules offered by other departments in the University. This allows students to tailor their academic study to their own interests and strengths, develop useful complementary skills such as languages, or gain knowledge that helps make them unique as graduates.
Students will develop a range of broad skills on the course including communication skills, critical thinking skills, problem solving skills and analytical skills.
