The part time Batchelor of Arts degree in Child and Family Studies is custom designed to enable you to gain a relevant qualification from one of the world's leading universities whilst continuing in your work. You can enrol in the four-year part-time BA programme in Child and Family Studies if you work with children, young people, and families, either in a paid or voluntary role, and want to enhance your professional skills through further study. Your professional experience and ongoing work are crucial aspects of this degree. In each module, you will ground and critically examine theoretical learning in relation to your practical experiences.
The course offers a flexible mode of study and attendance: You will dedicate one lunchtime or early evening per week to attending class for two hours. Before each class, you will receive structured materials to engage with online. During class, you may discuss your understanding with your group and module tutor, who will be available to revisit or clarify points and lead the class.
The focus remains on helping you develop academic skills and becoming an effective, reflective practitioner. The teaching is imaginative and supportive to intellectually stretch you and assist with any learning challenges. Small group sizes ensure active engagement and peer support. The Lifelong Learning Centre staff are dedicated to assisting you in all aspects of your progress. We’ll support you in flexible ways; drop-ins, online and in person one-to-ones and clear guidance, enabling you to keep on track and realise your aspirations and goals.
Throughout your degree, you will enhance your critical and conceptual understanding of children, young people, and families, exploring ethical, professional, cultural, and global considerations. Insights from disciplines such as sociology, social policy, health, and psychology will be explored, with emphasis is placed on engaging with research materials and processes.
Assessment methods are creative, often simulating authentic professional experiences. Tasks and document creation mirror what you might encounter in your current or future professional roles. The Lifelong Learning Centre views assessment as a key way for you to learn through authentic and practical experiences, with constructive feedback from tutors supporting this process.
