Programme specification

The programme will:

- The distinctiveness, appeal and strength of University of Leeds Joint Honours programmes lie in the unusual combination of depth, breadth and flexibility which they offer, as well as in the exceptional range of language combinations available
- They permit students to study two languages in depth and to degree level, while acquiring a broader range of skills than is typically possible within a single honours degree
- Students acquire the flexibility of mind and variety of learning techniques needed to switch between two languages
- A further element of distinctiveness is the flexibility of the programme structure, which allows students to change direction easily
- These programmes provide the opportunity to undertake study abroad.

Research Skills:
1. Develop students' independent research and project management skills so they are able to undertake, with supervision, an autonomous piece of sustained research work (the Final-Year Project).
2. Develop advanced presentation skills in oral and written modes.
3. Develop analytical, critical thinking and reasoning skills.
4. Act with academic integrity and develop awareness of research ethics appropriate for the field(s) of study.

Language Skills and Intercultural Awareness:
1. Develop advanced language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
2. Develop an understanding of the vocabulary, grammar and registers of the language(s) studied.
3. Develop an understanding of the ways in which cultures interact.
4. Equip students to work and function effectively in another country.

Subject Knowledge:
1. Develop a general knowledge of the societies in which the target language is spoken.
2. Develop in-depth knowledge of aspects of literatures, cultures, linguistic contexts, history, politics, social and economic structures.
3. Equip students with the knowledge needed for a critical understanding of the field(s) of study.

Year Abroad in Japan. Students will spend this year of their programme in a country or region where the language of interest is used both in official contexts and as a daily means of communication. Where this period of residence abroad involves studying at a University, a list of approved locations and institutions will be provided for you during Level 1. Where you are able to choose a location, you must have this approved by the Year Abroad Tutor in your language area.

At Level 3, students must study 120 credits. Students are required to take a minimum of 40 credits in Japanese and a minimum of 40 credits in Spanish.  Overall, students must take 100 credits across their two subjects. 
All students must take 40 credits as a Final Year Project (FYP) module, which can be taken in - and count towards - either Japanese or Spanish. Any remaining credits should be taken as optional modules in either Japanese or Spanish.

In order to be eligible for an Honours degree, students must meet the normal Rules for Award by passing all modules which are designated to be passed for award or progression and by passing the required number of credits at each level as specified in the Curricular Regulations (at least 200 credits at Level 2 or above, of which at least 100 should be at Level 3).
