| EAST2720 | Japanese 2: Pre-Advanced Communication Skills 2 |
This module is not approved as a discovery module
This module aims to develop both written and spoken communication skills at the highest level to deal with a wide range of social and academic issues. Grammatical and lexical knowledge will be reinforced through both intensive and extensive reading. Writing skills will be enhanced through compositions and essay-writing exercises. Oral-aural skills will be also consolidated by speech presentations, discussions and listening practice.
Through focused training in both written and spoken Japanese, this module equips students with advanced communication skills applicable to social, academic, and professional settings. Students develop intensive and timed reading strategies, effective essay‑writing and translation techniques, and confident presentation and discussion skills.
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1) Critically analyse a range of complex Japanese on contemporary issues in their specific socio-cultural context
2) Produce clear, detailed and coherent written texts in Japanese on a variety of social and academic topics using the appropriate register.
3) Translate between Japanese and English, recognising important syntactic, lexical, and pragmatic differences in everyday and topic-specific contexts
4) Communicate effectively in spoken form, presenting complex information and different viewpoints on a range of topics.
5) Use digital technology to present an argument in a clear and engaging manner
6) Critically reflect on personal and linguistic development

Compositions and translations will be set as homework and returned with personalised feedback throughout the module. For speaking and listening, students will receive individual oral and written feedback on their in-course presentations. In the final week of Semester 2, each class will focus specifically on revising and preparing for the summative assessment, for which sample answers are available on Minerva
