Programme specification

Our taught MA Arabic/English translation provides intensive tuition in English>Arabic and Arabic>English translation across a wide range of text types, together with a sophisticated understanding of concepts in translation theory and practical translation techniques. On completion of this programme, students should have widened their understanding of the key theoretical issues, methodologies and approaches needed for a systematic study of translation. Additionally, students will have gained the interlingual and intercultural skills needed for well-informed translation decisions between Arabic and English and vice versa.
You will be taught by experts in both translation studies and Arabic/English - English/Arabic translation. In addition to the core modules, the programme offers you the opportunity to take a number of optional modules to allow you to tailor the MA to your own needs. The optional modules offer a wide range of professional and research skills that are all designed to enhance both the students' theoretical awareness and translation performance. The content of all modules, core and optional, is designed with the aim of showing the relevance of translation theory to translation practice in general and Arabic translation in particular. The ability to see English and Arabic stylistics from a comparative perspective, for example, feeds into the quality of translation choices made by the students.
Students have excellent career prospects as translators (English>Arabic or Arabic>English), translation revisers, or translation teachers. The large number of research-oriented modules in translation, linguistics, and intercultural studies also allow graduates to go on to pursue doctoral or other research in translation and related areas.
