This module aims to develop students' public speaking skills and their ability to write and critque formal speeches.
On completion of this module, students should be able to undertake a formal analysis of a given speech, write a persuasive speech and deliver a speech clearly and convincingly.
Students on completion of the module should thoroughly understand:
- formal characteristics of speeches;
- elements which contribute to the effectiveness of speeches;
- the process of writing a persuasive speech;
- the skills involved in delivering a speech effectively; and
- how presentational aids can be usefull employed in public speaking.
On completion of the module should be able to:
- discuss the formal elements of a given speech;
- write a persuasive speech
- employ good public speaking skills to good effect
- use presentational aids effectively
The following areas will be covered:
- Neo-Aristotelean approaches to speech analysis
- rhetorical devices such as alliteration, use of metaphor and tripling
- Speech writing
- Audience motivations
- Practise in oral delivery; and
- Effective use of Powerpoint and other visual aids

Informal weekly assessment of performance in seminars.
Class-based presentation in week 9, counting for 40% of the total formal assessment.
