Programme specification

Architecture is a profession, practice, and research domain that reflects both the physical and non-physical attributes applied to the built environment to form a city's layered knowledge. The MSc programme examines these two aspects in an interdisciplinary manner combining architecture and sustainability issues through critical debate and creative practice to aid students' development as designers of future cities and urban environments.

The MSc in Architecture Design is a unique programme for graduates looking to further their education and enhance their employability by acquiring new knowledge and skills with originality and a creative approach beyond the remit of standard architectural education. The programme combines high-level investigations into research-led design and critical theoretical ideas along with innovative contemporary design approaches, all set within a challenging design environment. It offers a firm grounding for those seeking to pursue further in architectural practice or an academic career.

Students engage with real-world conditions, using design and research to gain critical knowledge, skills and understanding of the role of architectural design in responding to social, economic, and cultural conditions. The programme modules are designed to investigate theories, concepts, and research methods relevant to architectural discourses such as urban design and socio-spatial sustainability. Learning across these modules supports the development of key skills in utilising a design and research orientated approach within an increasingly globalised context.

The MSc in Architecture Design supports the understanding and critical analysis of key concepts of global developments related to architectural design, urbanism, and cities. The course also engages with creative methodological approaches required to interpret, inquire about, and examine design problems and sites with complex challenges and work with different stakeholders and communities to raise questions and engage with radically challenging conditions. For this, we offer an opportunity for students to participate in this stimulating and increasingly relevant body of knowledge with a high level of spatial, social, and material resolutions.
