Module summary

This module is designed to immerse students in Architecture and urban design principles, methodologies, and practices. The studio structure and setup encourage hands-on exploration and critical thinking as students engage in real-world urban design projects. This module serves as a stepping stone for students to develop the necessary skills and design-thinking mindset for advanced architecture and urban design studies.

Objectives

- This module will demonstrate the students' ability to create architectural designs that satisfy both aesthetic, urban, and social requirements.
- Design contextually responsive and inclusive architectural proposals informed by precedent and analysis of human interaction and place.
- Develop and present complex architectural projects that integrate site, brief, and global cultural, social, technological and economic influences.
- Apply creative and critical thinking through research, experimentation and iterative refinement to produce integrated design solutions.
- Produce professionally informed proposals that apply regulations, construction and environmental knowledge, including fire safety and inclusive design standards.
- Communicate architectural ideas effectively using diverse media, digital tools and modelling techniques.
- Demonstrate effective independent and collaborative working, leadership and reflective practice in preparation for professional contexts.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Design how people interact with buildings and spaces, considering context, scale and inclusivity, informed by analysis of architectural precedents.

2: Develop and present a complex design project responding to context and brief, demonstrating understanding of global, cultural, social, technological and economic influences on architecture and urban

3: Demonstrate using research and experimentation, recognising stakeholder needs, and promoting equity, diversity and inclusion

4: Develop and refine briefs responding to users, site and context, and produce analysis and integrated urban design proposals.

5: Create designs that meet standards, applying regulations, and environmental knowledge, and address wellbeing and inclusivity.

6. Communicate ideas clearly using varied media, digital tools, and physical modelling.

Skills outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills:

a. Critical thinking

b. Creativity

c. Digital creation

d. Decision making.

e. Personal/self/career management

Syllabus
