Module summary

This module prepares students for responsible architectural practice by integrating cultural, social, economic and technological contexts with ethical, professional and technical responsibilities. It develops skills in research, judgement and collaboration to evaluate design impacts across project lifecycles, manage risk and procurement, and apply regulations. Emphasis is placed on reflective learning, professional competence and delivering safe, sustainable, high-value outcomes for clients, communities and environments.

Objectives

1. Develop awareness of the social, cultural, environmental and economic forces shaping architecture and urban design.

2. Equip students to apply ethical standards, professional responsibilities and regulatory frameworks in architectural decision-making.

3. Strengthen ability to evaluate design proposals in terms of lifecycle performance, value, risk and sustainability.

4. Build competence in using research, stakeholder engagement and evidence-based methods to inform professional judgement.

5. Prepare students for practice by fostering skills in collaboration, project coordination, procurement processes and reflective professional development.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate critical understanding of how global, cultural, social, technological and economic factors shape architecture and urban design.

2. Apply ethical principles, professional Codes of Conduct and responsibilities to clients, users, collaborators, society and the environment.

3. Evaluate how design decisions affect client value, community outcomes for Architecture projects.

4. Understand principles of responsible professional practice.

5. Demonstrating critical self-reflection and the ability to work within personal competence.

6. Adopt a reflective approach to professional learning, identifying development needs, maintaining current knowledge of standards and best practice.
