Digital capabilities are essential for current graduates, regardless of the area or discipline they are aspiring to work in. Whilst STEM subjects may be well-served through role-specific training, the arts and humanities have a more fluid and rapidly developing relationship with digital tools, technologies, literacies and ethics. In the UK, there are several well-established postgraduate programmes in Digital Humanities, with King’s and UCL showing the strongest and most consistent recruitment. Students from across AHC at Leeds who are interested in diversifying and specialising their skillsets, knowledge and experience around digital heritage, culture, texts, and creativity, are not able to pursue their ambitions for postgraduate study at Leeds and instead must go elsewhere. We feel that the current development of digital infrastructure, pedagogy and research at the University of Leeds makes this an appropriate time to develop a new offering in our portfolio of postgraduate taught programmes.
The University of Leeds is investing in its capacity for digital education, infrastructure and research. The launch of the Digital Creativity and Cultures Hub, the Digital Transformation strategy, and the investment in physical resources and learning spaces across campus, such as HELIX and the Edward Boyle Makerspace, show a coherent commitment to advancing the university’s position as a digitally innovative and anticipatory institution. The proposed MA programme provides a taught educational dimension to this agenda that will draw on, and develop, the expertise and burgeoning research culture across Schools and Faculties, including but not limited to the School of English, History, Design, Media and Communication and Computing. The programme will intersect with the digital heritage and collections work within the university, and the networks with Leeds and the wider region. It will provide an alternative to flagship London-based programmes (Kings, UCL), and offer a connected, outward facing programme that is embedded in the region as well as the university.
