The MA in Classics and Ancient History at Leeds offers a research-led exploration of the ancient Mediterranean world, drawing on a rich interdisciplinary tradition that spans literature, history, philosophy, religion, and material culture. The programme is designed to support students with a wide range of academic backgrounds and interests, whether they are preparing for doctoral research or seeking advanced training relevant to careers in education, heritage, museums, archives, publishing, and the wider cultural sector.
The programme combines structured research training with flexible optional study and an extended independent dissertation. Core teaching develops advanced skills in research design, source analysis in different evidence types, historiography, digital tools, and critical engagement with current scholarship. Students work closely with academic staff to develop the intellectual and practical foundations required for postgraduate research and professional practice.
Optional modules are organised through broad disciplinary pathways in ancient history, ancient literature, ancient culture, and ancient languages, alongside an applied placement pathway. These modules are research-led and host rotating topics that reflect staff research expertise and emerging developments in the field. This structure allows students to tailor their degree to their interests, whether they wish to specialise in a particular area or pursue a broadly interdisciplinary programme of study.
Students benefit from access to extensive library and digital resources, including major research collections, alongside opportunities to engage with rare books, archival materials, and objects relevant to the ancient world. Teaching is delivered through small-group seminars, language classes, research workshops, and supervised independent study. Students are fully integrated into the research culture of the School, being strongly encouraged to attend research seminars, guest lectures, and academic events, fostering engagement with current debates and scholarly practice.
A key feature of the programme is the dissertation, an extended piece of independent research developed in consultation with a specialist supervisor. The dissertation allows students to pursue an in-depth investigation of a topic of their choosing, drawing on primary sources and advanced scholarship, and provides essential preparation for doctoral study or research-focused professional roles.
The programme also offers opportunities for placement-based learning through an optional applied module. Placements with cultural, heritage, educational, or related organisations enable students to apply their academic expertise in professional contexts, develop practical experience, and reflect critically on the contemporary relevance of Classics and Ancient History.
On completion of the programme, graduates will have developed advanced skills in independent research, critical analysis, project management, and written and oral communication. They will be well prepared for doctoral study and for a wide range of careers in heritage, museums, education, publishing, policy, and the broader cultural and creative sectors.
