Programme specification

Our Sustainability and Business programme is aimed at graduates and professionals who wish to pursue careers in sustainability facing roles in organisations and businesses of different sizes and geographies. We prepare the next generation of sustainability professionals aiming to develop, reinvent and innovate organisations in an increasingly challenging world.

Established in 2008 the MSc Sustainability and Business programme was one of the first of its kind in the UK. Graduates of the programme have taken on influential roles in businesses, government agencies, start-ups, research institutes and consultancy firms across the world. Alumni continue to support the programme in various capacities, including supporting the development of the curriculum to ensure it meets the changing requirements of the sustainability and business landscape.

Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the course combines a conceptual review of the relationships between business, environment and society, with an applied examination of the wide range of innovative and enterprising activities that relate to simultaneous environmental, social and economic value creation. The programme examines the ways in which individuals and organisations can address societal and environmental problems by developing thorough understanding of business organisations, developing new ventures and fostering innovation.

Perspectives from business, policy and wider stakeholder groups are examined, drawing on the expertise of the School of Earth and Environment, as well as the Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurial Studies, Leeds University Business School, the broader University, and practitioner communities.

The course introduces students to the range of sustainability, business management, entrepreneurship and innovation tools that are available and shows how they are applied in practical situations. It examines the factors that shape the success or failure of these initiatives - both from a business as well as a societal perspective.
