- allow the study of two disciplines to the same depth as any single honours student but with less breadth in each discipline;
- provide students with the ability to understand a range of written, spoken and broadcast material in Chinese and the ability to communicate effectively with Chinese speakers;
- enable students to spend a period of study in a Chinese university and to immerse themselves in Chinese society;
- provide a basis for further advanced study in either of the disciplines or in a cognate interdisciplinary area.
