This module is not approved as a discovery module
This module aims to develop students’ Chinese language skills to an advanced level that would benefit their career development and life-long learning. This module emphasises the active language skills students will need to gain an in-depth understanding of the Chinese-speaking world, to equip them for the workplace, for possible further study, and for lifelong engagement with China and the broader Sinophone world. The practical training in this module includes reading, writing, speaking and listening. Topics covered normally feature current affairs relevant to the contemporary Chinese-speaking world.
Students will be introduced a wide range of authentic written and audio-visual materials that feature different text types, styles and registers. Through completion of the practical tasks in each lesson, students will further develop their language competence and use Chinese fluently in both written and oral forms. The interactive in-class learning activities allow students to strengthen their language skills, and they will also learn to critically reflect on personal and linguistic development. Students will also gain a deeper understanding of the contemporary Chinese-speaking world, which will equip them with knowledge and skills required for future engagement with Chinese-speaking people in real-life contexts. Students will also be introduced to advanced language-learning resources that would help them develop self-learning skills and further strengthen their Chinese language skills beyond university.
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Appraise with a range of complex written and audio-visual Chinese-language materials seen in real-life contexts
2. Formulate advanced grammar and complex sentence structures using subject-specific vocabulary, in both written and oral Chinese
3. Critically evaluate timely and relevant topics concerning the contemporary Chinese-speaking world through engaging with authentic Chinese-language texts
4. Articulate and demonstrate intercultural competence through written and oral communication
