Entry requirements

  • Applicants should have the following:
  • A-level: A minimum BBB including a science subject (Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics and Psychology). Other science based subjects will be considered. To be confirmed for 2024 entry.
  • We consider all A-level subjects for the remaining grades, except general studies or critical thinking.
  • EPQs are not considered within our scoring.
  • GCSE: 5 A*-C (new grading 4-9), including Maths, English language and a science.
  • Other course specific tests:
You will need to show evidence of study in the last 5 years.
  • DBS Checks
The University of Leeds is obliged to refuse admission to applicants for certain courses which are regulated by national or statutory bodies where enhanced DBS checks or Certificates of Good Conduct reveal prior criminal behaviour giving rise to concern for the protection of the public.
  • As part of your application to study you are required to declare any criminal convictions in order that certain checks with the DBS can be undertaken. The University will send further instructions as part of the admissions process where such checks are required.
  • The DBS check can only include background checks on your time in the UK. If you have been resident in the UK for less than 3 years, then a criminal record check from your home country is required in addition to the UK DBS check. This may be referred to as a ‘Certificate of Good Conduct’ (CoGC) but the name varies.
  • Occupational Health Clearance
Any offer of a place to study on this course is conditional upon a satisfactory confidential occupational health assessment, which will include a health questionnaire, and if necessary further telephone consultation and/or an appointment with an occupational health clinician. Screening for serious communicable disease, (Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and a review of immunisation status and needs, which includes COVID-19, will also be arranged before beginning your studies.
  • HEOPS offers guidance on occupational health resources and health surveillance.
  • Access to HE diploma
  • 30 credits at level 3 with distinction (a minimum of 15 in science), and 15 level 3 credits with merit. To be confirmed for 2024 entry.

  • BTEC
  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (QCF): distinction/distinction/distinction and must contain at least one-third science content at distinction.
  • Health and Social Care qualifications have insufficient science content and will only be considered with an additional science A level – Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics or Psychology.
  • All BTEC modules must be listed on your UCAS form or else your application will be rejected.

Programme specification

The information on this page is accurate for students entering the programme from September 2023. For students who entered the programme before September 2023, you can find the details of your programme: BSc (Hons) Audiology

The programme is the only Healthcare Science (Audiology) programme to sit within a School of Medicine. The School of Medicine at the University of Leeds comprises world class researchers and highly experienced clinical and academic staff. Students benefit from being taught by a range of clinical and academic professionals within the School and will learn alongside students from other professions within the School including medicine, radiography and cardiac physiology.

The School comprises a well-established, highly innovative Service User and Carer group. Students on the programme benefit from interactions with members of this group starting at the point of admissions; members contribute to the admissions process via involvement in the Multiple Mini Interviews which are an innovative approach with regards to undergraduate audiology programmes in the UK.

Students develop their clinical skills via both practical sessions which take place in our state-of-the-art on-campus audiology laboratories, and clinical placements within departments across the Yorkshire and Humber region. Students spend a considerable amount of time in clinical placement starting in their first year and increasing in time in their second and third years. Students attend block placements in vision and neurophysiology departments in year 1 in addition to audiology clinical placements throughout the programme. All of our students are trained in departments by highly experienced Clinical Educators, all of whom are required to obtain a clinical training qualification from the University.

In addition to developing knowledge and clinical competence in routine theoretical and clinical audiology, students also have opportunities to study specialist areas of interest within year 3 (Independent Study module and Research Project). The Year 3 student project/research dissertation provides an opportunity for students to identify their own area of interest and further develop this by undertaking a systematic review of the literature, an audit of practice or empirical research. Students are encouraged to present their findings at national conferences and submit their projects of publication in peer reviewed journal where appropriate.

Thus, the programme will:

1. Provide students with an excellent and varied learning experience, prepared and delivered in an inspiring way.

2. Provide students with the knowledge, competencies and communication skills, necessary to deliver first class audiological services.

3. Enable students to become successful and reflective, evidence based practitioners, with the ability to develop independently and within a team.

4. Inspire students to make positive choices, personally, professionally and for the improvement of health care.

5. Provide students with a wide range of subject specific and transferable skills, which will allow entry into healthcare, research and non-subject specific professions.

6. Enable students, through the acquisition of key skills, to continue with their learning and career development following completion of their studies.
