This module will build on the knowledge gained within the Fundamentals of Hearing Science and the Routine Audiological Disorders and Assessment modules in Level 1 to develop knowledge and understanding regarding non-routine, specialist disorders of the auditory and vestibular systems. Epidemiology of a range of disorders will be discussed and approaches for diagnosis and assessment will be introduced.
The aim of this module is to advance student's knowledge and understanding regarding routine audiology disorders and develop knowledge and understanding regarding the epidemiology of non-routine/specialist audio-vestibular disorders and assessment techniques.
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Discuss the epidemiology of non-routine, specialist auditory disorders
2. Demonstrate understanding of a range of non-routine audiological test techniques including appropriate use and results analysis and interpretation
3. Discuss the pathophysiology and presenting symptoms of vestibular disorders
4. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the approaches utilised to diagnose and assess vestibular disorders
- Epidemiology of non-routine audiological disorders (eg pathophysiology, prevalence, symptoms and clinical signs of otitis media, functional hearing loss, auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder, ototoxicity and otosclerosis)
- Epidemiology of Tinnitus (adults) including risk factors, prevalence, clinical signs, symptoms and assessment
- Understanding and use of specialist/non-routine audiological tests eg ULLs, Speech Testing, ABR, OAEs, acoustic reflexes
- Epidemiology of vestibular disorders
- Introduction to vestibular assessment

A number of methods will be employed to monitor student progress:
Student progress will be monitored continually throughout the module via monitoring of engagement and contributions during taught sessions, in particular during seminars.
A tutorial half way through the module will be utilised to check learning and progress in completion of the assessed workbook.
