Approach to Assessment
In Year 4 each module takes a different assessment approach which is authentic and appropriate to the content and learning expected.
Clinical Skills and Practice 4: In this module students develop their knowledge skills and behaviours to allow them to develop as safe dental practitioners. An unseen online time-limited exam using selected answer questions assesses the application of knowledge. An unseen clinical case viva will be used to assess the synthesis of clinical information and clinical reasoning and treatment planning skills.
A Continuous Clinical Portfolio (CCP) is a Pass for Progression element of the module which provides a framework for the monitoring of clinical progress across clinical mandatory requirement, simulated skills gateway tests and the continuous grading of clinical experience and behaviours. The continuous monitoring and Sign-Off for individual students is managed by the School of Dentistry Clinical Progress Committee. A student must be Signed-Off by the Clinical Progress Committee to allow progress into the next year of the programme. This ensures that students have met the General Dental Council Safe Practitioner Framework behaviours requirements as they progress through the programme.
Dental and Biomedical Sciences 4: This module focusses on the acquisition and application of knowledge to support dental practice and underpins the knowledge base across the themes. An unseen online time-limited exam will be used to assess this knowledge and a poster presentation will allow students to demonstrate their exploration of a technological or scientific development in relation to oral or systemic disease.
Personal and Professional Development 4: This module follows the students on their learning journey to professional registration and is continuously assessed by the completion of a Professional Development Portfolio (PDP) with final Sign-Off at the end of the year dependant on having completed all required components. A written reflective assignment will be used to assess student reflection and insight a chosen ethical, leadership and teamworking scenario.
Enquire 4: In this module students will submit a short Capstone project abstract to gain feedback in preparation for the summative assessment which is a presentation of their project. The presentation will be in a pre-recorded format and students will be asked to explore the potential impact and implications of their work within the wider community and healthcare system.
