Year 4
Subject Specific Learning Outcomes
By the end of Year 4, you will be able to:
1. Communicate fluently and appropriately, maintaining a high degree of grammatical accuracy, in Spanish
and Portuguese (between C1 and C2 Levels of the CEFR).
2. Identify, use and reflect on complex linguistic structures and different registers in Spanish and Portuguese.
3. Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and an ability to see the world’s societies and cultures from multiple
perspectives.
4. Engage with multiple genres to support effective work and functioning in other countries.
5. Show a broad understanding and cultural awareness of the Spanish and Portuguese- speaking countries as
multicultural societies.
6. Demonstrate depth of engagement with specific aspects of art, literature, and culture as well as of social
and historical issues pertaining to Spanish and Portuguese- speaking countries.
7. Make use of specialist knowledge to engage critically with current debates in the field(s) of study
Skills Learning Outcomes
By the end of Year 4, you will be able to:
1. Produce an autonomous piece of extended research work (the Final-Year Project), responding to guidance
and feedback from a supervisor.
2. Present a structured, sustained argument, and communicate using terminology and concepts appropriate
to the field(s) of study.
3. Evaluate and critically synthesize aspects of recent enquiry in the field(s) of study.
4. Reflect on, and work in accordance with, the ethical considerations raised in the research process.
5. Make connections across differing perspectives in order to explore ideas, identify problems and provide
solutions
6. Meet deadlines through working effectively on project (including the FYP)
Competence Standards
1. Communicate in Spanish and Portuguese on a range of topics both in written and oral styles
2. Gather information from a range of sources and use reasoning and judgement to evaluate and analyse
3. Work independently on a project, with appropriate support
4. Appraise and compare aspects of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking cultures and societies
5. Direct, monitor and evaluate your own work and consider the advantages and disadvantages of different
methods of enquiry
- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to the area(s) studied;
- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility;
- the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations;
- the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences;

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme. These may include an extended research project, essays, individual and group presentations, creative writing exercises, portfolio, podcasts, reflective logs and exams.
