Assessment

Approach to Assessment in Year 3
In Year 3 each module takes a different assessment approach which is authentic and appropriate to the content and learning expected.

Clinical Skills and Practice 3: In this module students develop their knowledge skills and behaviours to allow them to develop as safe dental practitioners.

An unseen clinical case oral examination will be used to assess the synthesis of clinical information, clinical reasoning and treatment planning skills.

Unseen online time-limited exam will be used to assess the application and synthesis of knowledge.

A Continuous Clinical Portfolio (CCP) is a Pass for Progression element of the module which provides a framework for the monitoring of clinical progress across clinical mandatory requirements, clinical competency tests, presentation of real patient cases and the continuous grading of clinical experience and behaviours.

The continuous monitoring and Sign-Off for individual students is managed by the School of Dentistry Clinical Progress Committee. A student must be Signed-Off by the Clinical Progress Committee to allow qualification. This ensures that students have met the General Dental Council Safe Practitioner Framework behaviours requirements at the point of qualification.

Enquire 3: In this module students will gain formative experience in presenting their Capstone project proposal and writing a project abstract. The summative assessment components of this module will be a written submission focusing on the rational and methodology of the chosen Capstone project and a presentation of the completed project. The presentation will be in a pre-recorded format with students being asked to explore the impact and implications of their work within the wider community and healthcare systems.

Personal and Professional Development 3: This module follows the students on their learning journey to professional registration and is continuously assessed by the completion of a Professional Development Portfolio (PDP). The PDP will evidence the students’ ability to complete the thematic reflections and autonomous action planning required for transition to the world of work and registration as a dental professional. PDP Sign-Off at the end of the year is dependent on having completed all required components. The knowledge component of this module is assessed by an unseen online time-limited exam.
