Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- Demonstrate a sophisticated and integrated understanding of subject knowledge from across the broader field of genetics.
- Appraise recent developments and hypotheses within the discipline of genetics, making use of scholarly reviews and primary sources, identifying uncertainly, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge.
- Apply advanced analytical and data handling skills to critically evaluate information and experimental results and devise solutions to unfamiliar problems in genetics research.
- Undertake an extended investigative project, designing appropriate research strategies to test complex scientific questions in an area relevant to genetics.
- Identify and implement health and safety, ethical regulations and environmental considerations through the completion of an extended final year project and other relevant contexts.


1. Critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise developments and hypotheses within Genetics making use of a variety of sources.  
2. Effectively apply theoretical and practical knowledge to solve problems in Genetics.
3. Effectively communicate to a variety of audiences through, for example, written and oral approaches, scientific, technical and mathematical concepts, and theoretical principles making use of equations, illustrations, figures and references as appropriate to Genetics.
4. Demonstrate a range of skills in Genetics relevant to pure and applied research in academia, industry and the natural environment with support as appropriate.
5. Collect, process, analyse, interpret and effectively communicate data (numerical and non-numerical), using appropriate techniques and tools, and form logical, reasonable conclusions and make recommendations, using appropriate support where necessary.
6. Collect, process, analyse, interpret and effectively communicate visual data, using appropriate techniques and tools.
7. Effectively follow practical experimental protocols and use a range of techniques and apparatus in the laboratory environment, as appropriate to Genetics, competently and safely, using appropriate support where necessary.
8. Design, plan and execute a research project with appropriate support as necessary.
9. Work within health and safety, environmental consideration and ethical frameworks.
10. Effectively collaborate as a member of a team working on a shared task relevant to Genetics with appropriate support where required.

Students will have had the opportunity to develop and refine, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- Effectively explain, critique and propose ways in which biology and genetic researchers can contribute to developing sustainable solutions to current and future world challenges.
- Effectively communicate and critique genetics information, ideas, problems and solutions in various formats and to a range of audiences.
- Demonstrate skills necessary for exercising personal responsibility, self-management, organisation and decision making in complex and unpredictable situations.
- Demonstrate effective teamworking skills in a range of situations including inter-disciplinary contexts.

Assessment

We use a variety of assessment methods to help you develop and assess the specific learning and skills outcomes. At level 3 these may include assessed practical work, involving safety competencies, advanced practical skills, complex data handling and statistics, together with problem-solving exercises, multiple-choice tests, group work, essays, project work and oral presentations. There will be opportunities to complete practice questions and receive feedback to support learning.
