(Award available for year: Bachelor of Science)
Year 3 (Level 6)
Subject Specific Learning Outcomes
1. Apply knowledge, clinical skills and behaviours for the supervised management of dental diseases for adults and child patients.
2. Demonstrate effective communication skills for clinical practice.
3. Discuss the biological and scientific principles of systemic and oral disease related to clinical practice.
4. Demonstrate the professional and ethical behaviours of self-management, cultural competence, and social accountability that apply to dentistry.
5. Discuss models related to health and illness at an individual and population level.
6. Design a project using enquiry-based skills in relation to dentistry.
The BSc Hons in Oral Sciences is a further sub-degree award. The 5-year programme requires a sub-degree to recognise study to Year 3 (FHEQ Level 6) and the award of a BSc (FHEQ Level 4 120, Level 5 120 credits and Level 6 120 credits = total 360 credits, requiring successful completion of all Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 modules). In this case, the BSc is a non-clinical and non-GDC registrable award.

3. Demonstrate safe radiographic technique under prescription and
supervision.
4. Demonstrate safe provision of simple restorative treatment for adult patients in the clinical environment.
5. Demonstrate the ability to assist simple operative procedures in real patients under supervision.
6. Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients, carers and members of the dental team in the clinical setting

Approach to Assessment in Year 3
In Year 3 each module takes a different assessment approach which is authentic and appropriate to the content and learning expected.
Clinical Skills and Practice 3: In this module students develop their knowledge skills and behaviours to allow them to develop as safe dental practitioners. An unseen online time-limited exam using selected answer questions assesses the application of knowledge. Patient communication skills will be assessed through a formal Objective, Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) which uses simulated patients and assessors in a series of communication stations.
A Continuous Clinical Portfolio (CCP) is a Pass for Progression element of the module which provides a framework for the monitoring of clinical progress across clinical mandatory requirement, simulated skills gateway tests and the continuous grading of clinical experience and behaviours. The continuous monitoring and Sign-Off for individual students is managed by the School of Dentistry Clinical Progress Committee. A student must be Signed-Off by the Clinical Progress Committee to allow progress into the next year of the programme. This ensures that students have met the General Dental Council Safe Practitioner Framework behaviours requirements as they progress through the programme.
Dental and Biomedical Sciences 3: This module focusses on the acquisition and application of knowledge to support dental practice and underpins the knowledge base across the themes. An unseen online time-limited exam will be used to assess this knowledge.
Personal and Professional Development 3: This module follows the students on their learning journey to professional registration and is continuously assessed by the completion of a Professional Development Portfolio (PDP) with final Sign-Off at the end of the year dependant on having completed all required components. The knowledge component of this module is assessed by an unseen online time-limited exam.
Enquire 3: In this module students will gain formative experience in presenting their Capstone project proposal. The formal summative component of this module will be a written submission which focuses on the rational and methodology of the chosen Capstone project.
