Learning outcomes

Subject Specific Learning Outcomes

1. An advanced understanding of human social, economic, political and cultural systems from a spatial and/or environmental perspective.

2. An understanding of geography's intellectual development and important theoretical perspectives applied in the study of space, place and the environment.

3. An advanced understanding of the key challenges for transport and mobility in the developed and development contexts work and how these relate to debates about transport planning and policy solutions.

4. A critical appreciation of the practical contributions made by geographers to debates and policy on societal and environmental issues, and an understanding of their potential for continuing such contributions.

5. The critical skills necessary to engage with ideas in the social sciences and humanities; and to employ these ideas as a basis for their own research.

6. Skills in the use of geographical information systems, and the application of qualitative and quantitative analysis to geographical study.

1. Demonstrate understanding of the principles of geographical research and scholarship
2. Design, plan and execute research relevance to human and environmental geography.
3. Apply and evaluate statistical and spatial approaches to working with quantitative data. This includes the use of Geographical Information Systems and other appropriate software to analyse and present data.
4. Design, conduct, and effectively communicate a research project relevant to human geography
5. Effectively communicate qualitative and quantitative information to a range of audiences.
6. Apply knowledge, creativity, and critical thinking skills to address problems in contemporary human geography, Transport Studies and related fields.

Assessment

Approach to assessment

In the final year, you'll synthesise learning, knowledge and skills developed in previous years when undertaking the dissertation module. This independent research project will consolidate your research and transferable skills, which are key to all graduate roles and career paths. Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:


- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of human geography;

- work that draws on a wide variety of material;

- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;

- evidence of an ability to conduct independent, in depth enquiry within human geography;

- work that is typically both evaluative and creative.
