BSc Geology

Year 2

(Award available for year: Diploma of Higher Education)

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of the geological sciences, such as the recognition and interpretation of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks; the roles of geochemistry and geophysics in understanding the Earth; and the way in which plate tectonics and surface processes shape our planet and its landscape.
2. Employ the main methods of enquiry in the subject and critically evaluate the appropriateness of different methods of enquiry, such as reinforcing the ability to integrate skills and theoretical knowledge through advanced fieldwork problem solving.
3. Use and evaluate a range of techniques to initiate and undertake the analysis of geological data and information, such as a how to construct and interpret geological maps and cross-sections using knowledge from field work or use suites of rock samples to infer tectonic environments and processes.
4. Develop skills relevant to the design and execution of a geological field project, including the synthesis and analysis of results and the use of scientific literature.

Skills Learning Outcomes

1. Intellectual skills - for example, analysing generic and subject specific theories to situations outside the context in which they were originally studied, and evaluating and critiquing of received opinion through individual problem-based exercises.
2. Communication skills – for example, demonstrating the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied such as enhanced development of data presentation via oral presentations, posters, technical reports and essays.
3. Interpersonal and teamwork skills - for example, demonstrating the skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility such as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
4. Numerical and C&IT skills – for example, data collection, handling, and analysis, including the visualisation of geospatial data.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of each module:

- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects and skills from the geological sciences to both complex (standard) and simple (novel) situations
- work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of materials
- demonstrating analysis and synthesis of a wide variety of information sources
- demonstrating basic professional competencies expected of a geologist
