Assessment

Approach to Assessment in Year 2.

In Year 2 each module takes a different assessment approach which is authentic and appropriate to the content and learning expected.

Clinical Skills and Practice 2: In this module students develop their knowledge skills and behaviours to allow them to develop as safe dental practitioners. An unseen online exam using selected answer questions assesses the application of knowledge. A Continuous Clinical Portfolio (CCP) is a Pass for Progression element of the module which provides a framework for the monitoring of clinical progress across clinical mandatory requirement, simulated skills gateway tests and the continuous grading of clinical experience and behaviours. The continuous monitoring and Sign-Off for individual students is managed by the School of Dentistry Clinical Progress Committee. A student must be Signed-Off by the Clinical Progress Committee to allow progress into the next year of the programme. This ensures that students have met the General Dental Council Safe Practitioner Framework behaviours requirements as they progress through the programme.

Dental and Biomedical Sciences 2: This module focusses on the acquisition and application of knowledge to support dental practice and underpins the knowledge base across the themes. An unseen online time-limited exam will be used to assess this knowledge.

Personal and Professional Development 2: This module follows the students on their learning journey to professional registration and is continuously assessed by the completion of a Professional Development Portfolio (PDP) with final Sign-Off at the end of the year dependant on having completed all required components. In Year 2 the evidence collected to complete the PDP focuses on reflection on communication skills and collaborative learning. A reflective assignment will focus on experiences of preparing and presenting a group poster in relation to a given ethical topic.

Enquire 2: In this module knowledge acquisition and application is assessed using an unseen online time-limited exam using selected answer questions. Students will complete a written assignment reflecting on their experience engaging with individuals who from, or who work closely with, different communities. Students will also undertake a critical appraisal on a given published journal paper.
