Learning outcomes

Subject Specific Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this programme, you will be able to: 

- Apply in-depth knowledge and judge the selection of appropriate methodologies (including the application of statistics) to answer a specific research question.
- Apply and appraise the different types of evidence synthesis methodology.
- Apply theoretical knowledge of population oral health to instigate improvement in oral health inequalities
- Appraise different strategies for interventions to improve health in order to select the most effective and feasible
- Analyse social determinants of health and influences on health behaviour and relate this to the prioritisation of health promotion activities and describe and apply theoretical approaches and models of health promotion.  
- Formulate an answerable research question and conduct an individual project independently.

Competence Standards

1.Demonstrate understanding of factors affecting health and oral health inequalities including the wider determinants of health, the relationship of the physical, economic and cultural environment to health and its impact on the population’s health and wellbeing.
2. Find, critically appraise, interpret, and communicate research evidence and health related data.
3. Demonstrate understanding of research methodologies in scientific enquiry, including the strengths and limitations of different approaches to gathering research evidence.
4. Effectively communicate the key concepts of Dental Public Health to a variety of audiences with appropriate support as necessary
5. Be able to work within a team of people to problem solve and create solutions.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of in-course assessments which will include presentations, written assignments, group work, end of module written examinations and an individual project. Assessments have been designed to be authentic in reflecting the skills required within the discipline of Dental Public Health. You will experience a variety of written assessments to help you demonstrate your academic literacy, such as a completion of an individual project, Short Answer Questions and Critical Appraisal. Your verbal communication skills will also be assessed in seminar presentations.
