Approach to Assessment in Year 1
In year 1 all final module outcomes will be pass or fail. Students will receive feedback on their marked assessments and receive a formative mark. The focus is on feedback and preparing students for the competent level standard which is required of clinical programmes.
At the end of semester 1 Year 1 students will sit a combined formative online written exam which will comprise content from each of the four modules. This assessment aims to expose students to each of the question item styles used within the modules as well as providing feedback on performance in relation to the expected standard. This formative assessment opportunity also introduces students to the online time-limited examination process in a low-stakes setting.
Clinical Skills and Practice 1: In this module students develop their knowledge skills and behaviours to allow them to develop as safe dental practitioners. An unseen online exam using selected answer questions assesses the application of knowledge. A Continuous Clinical Portfolio (CCP) is a Pass for Progression element of the module which provides a framework for the monitoring of clinical progress across clinical mandatory requirement, simulated skills gateway tests and the continuous grading of clinical experience and behaviours. The continuous monitoring and Sign-Off for individual students is managed by the School of Dentistry Clinical Progress Committee. A student must be Signed-Off by the Clinical Progress Committee to allow progress into the next year of the programme. This ensures that students have met the General Dental Council Safe Practitioner Framework behaviours requirements as they progress through the programme.
Dental and Biomedical Sciences 1: This module focusses on the acquisition and application of knowledge to support dental practice and underpins the knowledge base across the themes. In year 1 this module is assessed using an unseen online time-limited exam using selected answer questions and an Objective, Structured, Practical Exam (OSPE). This will involve assessment using 3D specimens and models.
Personal and Professional Development 1: This module follows the students on their learning journey to professional registration and is continuously assessed by the completion of a Professional Development Portfolio (PDP) with final Sign-Off at the end of the year dependant on having completed all required components. In Year 1 the evidence collected to complete the PDP focusses on reflection on early professional behaviours, learning and wellbeing. The knowledge component of this module is assessed by an unseen online time-limited exam.
Enquire 1: This module introduces students to dental public health and applying knowledge into practical experience across different communities. In Year 1 the knowledge acquisition and application is assessed using an unseen online time-limited exam using selected answer questions. Students complete a written assignment reflecting on their experience in engaging with a world-café event.
