Subject Specific Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of Level 1, you will be able to
1. Understand and communicate basic personal information in short written texts and simple spoken interactions in the target language (for beginners)
2. Understand and communicate information, events, and ideas on familiar topics in written texts and spoken interactions in the target language (for post-A level or equivalent learners)
3. Recognise, describe, and use basic vocabulary and grammatical structures in the target language
4. Recognise and describe some basic social norms and cultural values in texts and contexts where the target language is used
5. Recognise and discuss some significant historical events that have shaped the cultures and societies where the target language is used
6. Apply basic analytical approaches to texts from the target cultures, including written, audiovisual, and digital media
7. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the nature of philosophical thought and methodology, and application of the skills needed to critically evaluate and identify different forms of philosophical argument
8. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of philosophy within some of the main areas of the discipline, including epistemology and metaphysics, and ethics and political philosophy, through accurate explanation of ideas and debates

You will be working towards the subject specific and skills learning outcomes by engaging with a variety of approaches to assessment which will depend on the programme, language pathway, and modules that you will take. At Level 1, assessment methods will typically include coursework in English (essays, commentaries) and the target language (short assignments collected in portfolios), oral presentations in English or the target language, exams in the target language that might include elements of English (for example, translation tasks).
