Subject Specific Learning Outcomes
By the end of Level 1, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate understanding of core linguistic terms and concepts, including common approaches to the study of language
2. Carry out a basic linguistic analysis of given written and/or spoken data, recognising and applying formal, qualitative and quantitative methods and relevant analytic techniques
3. Accurately explain and critically respond to selected ideas of some major historical work in philosophy, through the reading of primary texts
4. Accurately explain ideas and debates within some of the main areas of the discipline, including epistemology and metaphysics, and ethics and political philosophy
5. Apply basic skills to critically evaluate and identify different forms of philosophical argument.
6. Express your own views in the form of simple but coherent arguments, based on some amount of independent research, with close guidance
Skills Learning Outcomes By the end of Level 1, students will be able to:
1. Identify ethical and methodological issues involved in collecting data through the use of electronic and library-based resources
2. Express yourself in a clear, concise, focused and structured manner (Academic and Work Ready skill)
3. Gather, interpret and analyse information and ideas from a range of sources to aid understanding (Academic, Work Ready and Enterprise skill)
4. Identify when, why and how to appropriately acknowledge someone else’s work and ideas (Academic and Work Ready skill)

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme. These may include essays, open book exams, analysis tasks, group presentations, and research projects giving students opportunities to develop key skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, the ability to analyse authentic language data, synthesise information from multiple sources and evaluate theoretical debates.
