Competence Standards

1.Demonstrate effective assessment of patients in a range of healthcare settings, to enable diagnosis of common conditions and initiate appropriate management.
2.Identify when a patient is critically unwell, and initiate appropriate emergency management, including in time-pressured situations.
3.Demonstrate the clinical skills required of an FY1 doctor, as detailed in the GMC Outcomes for Graduates.
4.Provide equitable and respectful care to all patients, and their families, regardless of their gender, religion, ethnicity, or any other personal characteristics.
5.Understand the limits of your own competence and proactively seek help and support when necessary
6.Demonstrate effective communication, interpersonal skills and inter-professional communication.
7. Effectively demonstrate accurate record keeping for patient safety
8.Prescribe medications safely and appropriately.
9.Demonstrate application of research outcomes to patient care.
10.Uphold personal and professional standards of conduct that include, professional integrity, maintaining professional boundaries, and respecting others’ confidentiality, privacy and dignity when using social media.

Transferable (key) skills

Transferable (Key) Skills: The Extended Student Research and Evaluation Project (ESREP) is a core part of the MBChB programme, aimed at providing medical students with the opportunity to acquire, develop, and apply research and evaluation skills. RESS maps directly to Outcome 3 of Outcomes for Graduates (GMC 2018): `Professional Knowledge: We expect newly qualified doctors to demonstrate their knowledge through scholarly application to the care of patients in practice'. This is achieved through engagement with the following:

In Year 5 Students will apply and extend their skills to define, refine, plan, implement and complete a clinically relevant project in a timely manner, and learn appropriate clinical governance including ethics and information management. They will communicate learning outcomes effectively by oral and written assessment methods.

Assessment

Assessment is based on assessing core clinical knowledge, clinical skills and attitudes.

A variety of methods are employed including:
- Written reports
- Integrated MCQ and EMQ assessments
- Practical clinical skills (OSCE)
- Work based assessments.
- ESREP engagement.
