Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
1. Develop, integrate, synthesise and apply systematic and broad understanding of relevant and state-of-the-art concepts in biochemistry, to solve complex problems.
2. Interrogate and integrate diverse sources of scientific information, to design and develop methods for investigation and analysis as part of an extended piece of research on a biochemistry topic.
3. Identify and implement appropriate project planning strategies for an extended research project in biochemistry, which could include evaluation of ethics, hazards, environmental effects, sustainability and appreciation of costs.
4. Critically evaluate the outcomes of a research project and incorporate any new findings into our understanding of biochemistry as a discipline.

Transferable (key) skills

Integrated Masters students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
1. Work in a research environment with a high degree of autonomy and independence
2. Demonstrate skills in effective teamwork and leadership, working with others in an equitable and inclusive manner.
3. Communicate research data and ideas to a range of audiences, using subject-matter knowledge to defend a point of view.
4. Demonstrate advanced experimental, investigative, and other professional competencies important to the successful execution of an extended research project.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year and will include:
1. Evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry in Biochemistry;
2. Demonstrating the ability to apply knowledge to complex areas in Biochemistry;
3. Drawing on a range of perspectives within Biochemistry;
4. Evaluating and criticising received information and opinion;
5. Demonstrate work that is both evaluative and creative.
