Learning outcomes

- understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed knowledge of selected aspects of the languages, history, societies, cultures and literatures of the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries;
- understand the main issues of the past, current and future developments in these countries;
- demonstrate a high degree of intercultural competence with specific reference to the areas above, particularly as a result of the compulsory academic year and the obligatory term overseas;
- possess a high level of linguistic ability in both Portuguese and Spanish (in oral and aural proficiency, in context-sensitive communicative skills, and in written form);
- demonstrate familiarity with the diverse language varieties and cultures of the various countries where Portuguese and Spanish are spoken;
- posess a broad knowledge of the disciplines of Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Studies;
- understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed knowledge of the professional competencies expected of a graduate in Modern Languages and Cultures, some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in the area of Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Studies;
- deploy accurately standard techniques of critical analysis and enquiry within Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Studies;
- demonstrate an understanding of concepts and conceptual frameworks in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Studies which enable the development and sustaining of an argument;
- describe and comment on particular aspects of recent research and/or scholarship in the field;
- appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Studies;
- make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources;
- apply their knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out an extended piece of work or project on a relevant subject in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Studies ;
- conform to professional boundaries and norms where applicable.

1. Demonstrate effective use of the Spanish and Portuguese languages to analyse, appraise, and describe information, events, and ideas.
2. Demonstrate understanding of facts, ideas, theories and cultural/societal insights of the regions where Spanish and Portuguese are spoken.
3. Demonstrate comprehension to assigned materials and resources in the Spanish and Portuguese languages.
4. Demonstrate understanding of key facts and ideas in the study of Spanish and Portuguese societies.
5. Identify, explain, and evaluate debates, concepts, and principles which are features of the study of Spanish and Portuguese societies.
6. Evaluate and apply approaches to problem solving.
7. Design and demonstrate an independent and self-guided research project with the appropriate support when required.
