Learning outcomes

On successful completion of Level 3, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate a critical and sophisticated knowledge of the literary, cultural and socio-historical contexts in which literature is written;
2. Devise and execute an independent project in English or Music that synthesises diverse contexts and perspectives;
3. Produce a structured and coherent argument demonstrating sophisticated knowledge of critical terminology.
4. Interrogate and critique methodologies used in the study of music.

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of Level 3, students should be able to:

1. Work independently and on their own initiative to devise a project, generate imaginative and original ideas, and prioritise tasks to meet deadlines;
2. Demonstrate an advanced ability to conduct independent research, using supporting evidence to challenge or nuance their own ideas;
3. Work closely with others in response to challenging briefs with external/real-word implications.
4. Make independent use of a variety of digital resources to attain personal/professional goals.

Competence Standards
1. Effectively communicate a foundational understanding of the diversity and breadth of English literary and musical studies;
2. Apply relevant theories and concepts to literary and musical analysis, demonstrating an understanding of their significance and limitations; 
3. Shape independent arguments and theses concerning primary materials, with appropriate support.
If the chosen pathway includes an industrial placement
4. Demonstrate ability to direct, monitor and evaluate their work, by seeking/accepting feedback, within a workplace context, using appropriate support as necessary.
5. Demonstrate an awareness of own strengths and development needs and the need for ongoing learning and proactive continuing professional development. If the chosen pathway includes an international placement -
6. Collaborate effectively with other people in a new environment and successfully completes a period of work or study in another country.
7. Demonstrate self-awareness relating to personal and academic/professional development through successfully completing a period of work or study in another country.

Assessment

The Subject Specific and Skills Learning outcomes can be met through the core module, the Final Year Project, an extended 40-credit module spanning two semesters and requiring sustained skills of research, project management, critical thinking and advanced writing. Assessments on the specialist research modules vary according to the options chosen, but support the Final Year Project core through developing skills of independent research, critical thinking and sustained analysis.
