Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme students should have provided evidence of having:

- an advanced understanding of human social, economic, political and cultural systems from a spatial and/or environmental perspective;
- an understanding of geography's intellectual development and important theoretical perspectives applied in the study of space, place and the environment;
- a critical appreciation of the practical contributions made by geographers to debates and policy on societal and environmental issues, and an understanding of their potential for continuing such contributions;
- the critical skills necessary to engage with ideas in the social sciences and humanities; and to employ these ideas as a basis for their own research;
- skills in the use of geographical information systems and data analysis, and the application of qualitative and, particularly, quantitative methods/analysis to geographical study;
- transferable skills of teamwork, investigation, presentation and communication.

Competence Standards
1.Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key geographical concepts.
2.Effectively undertake research in human and environmental geography.
3.Apply statistical and spatial approaches for working with quantitative data (including use of Geographical Information Systems and other software to analyse and communicate data).
4.Critically evaluate and address themes in contemporary human geography.
5.Effectively communicate qualitative and quantitative information for a variety of audiences.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include tasks that will allow the student to:

- demonstrate the ability to apply a broad range of knowledge and concepts of human geography;
- produce work that draws on a wide variety of material;
- evaluate and critically appraise received opinion;
- evidence their ability to independently conduct in-depth quantitative enquiry within human geography;
- produce original work that is typically both evaluative and creative
