Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Year Abroad, you will be able to: 

1. Demonstrate practical and cultural understanding of the society of the country of residence
2. Demonstrate the ability to study within a different academic and cultural framework - having acquired academic and practical knowledge of the subject relating to your degree programme; OR
demonstrate a deeper understanding of the country and region (including history, economy, culture, and politics) in which you are studying or working as a British Council language assistant.
3. Improve your foreign language skills (in exchanges where the language is not English).
4. Demonstrate the ability to work within a professional educational environment (only relevant to language assistants).

Skills Learning Outcomes

1. Qualities and transferable skills necessary for working in another academic system and living in another country.
2. Enhanced practical language skills, both written and oral, in some cases in a language other than English, as required by the demands of study in another country.
3. Transferable skills in openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and culture.
4. Self-reliance and adaptability in developing awareness and understanding of a culture and society other than their own and exercise personal responsibility and decision making.
5. British Council language assistants: Experience of initiative and teamwork in a professional environment and enhanced personal development and self-awareness in a professional and accountable environment.

Assessment

Study placements:

- Assessments will be carried out by the host institution and vary according to the placement. Successful completion of the year will depend on a transcript of the grades obtained. At Leeds, the year abroad will be assessed on a pass/fail basis, i.e. individual marks obtained abroad will not be converted into Leeds equivalents.

British Council language assistants:

- Successful completion of the year will depend on a satisfactory submission of the Interim and End of Placement Reports. At Leeds, the year abroad will be assessed on a pass/fail basis.
