Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this programme, you will be able to:
- outline key theoretical approaches in media and communication and apply them to a variety of media texts
- critically analyse complex problems in the advanced study of media and communication
- evaluate a range of research techniques and methodologies in the field of media and communication, and apply them in your research
- independently design and develop a group research project centred around a critical issue within the field of media and communication

On successful completion of this programme, you will be able to:
- Critical thinking skills – the ability to critically evaluate the state of knowledge in media and communications studies.
- Teamwork/collaboration – work effectively with colleagues as part of a team to research a critical issue in media and communication in depth.
- Communications skills - apply advanced oral and written communication skills to present a coherent and sustained argument on media and communication scholarship, based on your research findings.

Competence Standards
1) Identify and evaluate major theoretical positions in communication and media and apply them effectively in research and scholarship.
2) Effectively find, collate and interpret information for research projects, from a variety of sources and formats, with appropriate support as necessary.
3) Use appropriate research techniques and methods to respond to communication related questions and problems in a variety of formats and for different audiences
4) Effectively communicate ideas, arguments and research outcomes, using appropriate support as necessary.

Assessment

Assessment in the MA Communication and Media takes a range of forms, including the completion of a 12,000-12,500 dissertation, literature reviews, essays, group presentations and individual research proposals.
