Learning outcomes

1. Recognise and apply the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of the geosciences.
2. Recognise the importance of time and scale in geosciences, including the 4D investigation of sedimentary sequences, igneous and metamorphic processes and tectonics.
3. Describe and identify common geological materials and their properties at a range of scales and discuss their possible origins.
4. Use 1D and 2D data to visualise geological systems in three dimensions.

Skills Learning Outcomes

1. Communication and IT skills – for example, interpret data and present findings in a variety of ways, such as oral presentations, posters, technical reports, and essays.
2. Interpersonal and collaboration skills – for example, work independently and as part of a team with an understanding of personal responsibility.
3. Referencing skills - for example, locate, evaluate, utilise, and correctly reference a variety of primary and secondary literature sources.
4. Systems thinking – for example, recognise and understand how parts of a complex (environmental, economic and social systems and interdependencies across these system) system work together.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme, and will include:
- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information, and techniques relevant to the discipline.
- work that covers a restricted area of the discipline.
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies.
- assess work completed independently and as part of a group.
