Learning outcomes

On successful completion of Level 1, you will be able to

1. Basic Language Proficiency in Japanese: You will be able to speak and write Japanese, including hiragana and katakana scripts, and basic Japanese kanji, use basic grammar and vocabulary, enabling an elementary level comprehension of Japanese, including basic dialogues and instructions, and expression of basic ideas and needs in writing and in conversation.
2. [For prior learners] Lower Intermediate Language Proficiency in Japanese: You will be able to speak and write post-beginner-level Japanese, including hiragana and katakana scripts, and lower-intermediate Japanese kanji, and use lower intermediate grammar and vocabulary, enabling lower intermediate level comprehension of Japanese, including more complex dialogues and instructions, and expression of ideas and needs in writing and in conversation.
3. Basic Language Proficiency in Russian: You will be able to speak and write Russian, including the Cyrillic alphabet in handwritten and typed form, and use basic grammar and vocabulary enabling an elementary level comprehension of Russian, including basic dialogues and instructions, and expression of basic ideas and needs.
4. [For prior learners] Intermediate Language Proficiency in Russian: You will be able to speak and write intermediate level Russian, and use intermediate grammar and vocabulary enabling an intermediate level comprehension of Russian, including understanding and communicating key ideas and events and taking part in everyday conversations.
5. Recognise and describe the social norms and cultural values that frame the societies in which the target languages are used.
6. Demonstrate sound, basic knowledge of cultures and societies in which the target languages are spoken that will inform specialization at later levels.
7. Appraise key aspects of the literatures and social and historical issues pertaining in the cultures in which Japanese and Russian are spoken.
8. Identify and apply the strategies to analyse and contextualise texts from the target culture conveyed in written and audio-visual formats (books, films, digital media content).

Skills Learning Outcomes

1. Present a structured and coherent argument in appropriate written and oral styles.
2. Identify, summarise and challenge evidence obtained from key sources.
3. Demonstrate integrity in use of material and ability to make reference to sources following conventions appropriate to the discipline.
4. Use effectively basic digital resources and tools to collect and communicate information and knowledge.

Assessment

You will be working towards the subject specific and skills learning outcomes by engaging with a variety of approaches to assessment, which will depend on the language pathway, and modules that you will take. At Level 1, assessment methods will typically include coursework in English (essays, commentaries) and the target language (short assignments collected in portfolios), individual and group oral presentations in English or the target language, exams in the target language that might include elements of English (for example, translating tasks).
