Learning outcomes

1. Appraise the wide scope of English language study, in optional modules that develop knowledge of contemporary research, its methods, theory, and applications.
2. Develop a critical and sophisticated knowledge of the literary, cultural and socio-historical contexts in which literature is written;
3. Produce a structured and coherent argument in a capstone project that shows expertise in research and its communication.

Skills Learning Outcomes

1. Incorporate sophisticated critical terminology in writing.
2. Conduct independent research, using supporting evidence and appropriate methodologies that are well-calibrated for the project.
3. Demonstrate sophisticated skills in all areas of study, including time management, writing, research, and referencing.

Competence Standards
1. Effectively communicate a foundational understanding of the diversity and breadth of English language and literary studies.
2. Apply relevant theories and concepts to linguistic and literary analysis, demonstrating an understanding of their significance and limitations.

Assessment

The Subject Specific and Skills Learning outcomes can be met through the choice of final year project, an extended 40-credit core module spanning two semesters and requiring sustained skills of research, project management, critical thinking and advanced writing. Assessments on the specialist research modules vary according to the options chosen, but are equally important in developing skills of independent research, critical thinking and sustained analysis. Assessment may be through presentation, poster, essay, or online time-limited-assessment (OTLA).
