BA English Literature with Creative Writing (International)

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of Level 1, students should be able to: 

1. Write in a variety of forms and genres including poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction;

2. Work in groups to read and respond to published work and each other’s work in progress;

3. Write critically, including acts of personal reflection incorporating a discussion of the process of feedback and review;

4. Demonstrate basic understanding of the broad field of English literary studies, including the genres of poetry, fiction, and drama from a range of literary periods and locations;

5. Show awareness of the importance of the literary, cultural, and socio-historical contexts in which literature is written and read;   

6. Read analytically and communicate effectively, using textual evidence to support an argument.  

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of Level 1, students should be able to:  

1. Evaluate different arguments and perspectives through supporting evidence and appropriate sources;  

2. Demonstrate critical thinking skills through presenting a structured and coherent argument;  

3. Communicate effectively in a variety of forms and to various audiences; 

4. Manage time, plan, and organise in response to creative and academic briefs. 

Assessment

The Subject Specific and Skills Learning outcomes can be met through the three core modules, regardless of optionality. Forms of assessment differs across modules, but typically include a coursework essay for English Literature modules and a combination of a portfolio and critical reflection for Creative Writing modules. The core modules embed a variety of alternative forms of assessments, including reflective logs, portfolios and group presentations, preparing students for diverse modes of assessment later in the programme.
