The programme will allow students to develop a broad range of knowledge in order to allow professional practice in any aspect of engineering geology, the largest employment sector of professional geoscientists. This will be achieved through training in relevant field and laboratory techniques for the practice of engineering geology and the development numeracy skills essential to the professional practice of engineering geology.
This course is professionally accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) on behalf of the Engineering Council. The JBM represents the five main professional bodies in the UK registering Civil Engineers, including The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), The Permanent Way Institution (PWI), The Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE), and The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT). This programme is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng-accredited undergraduate first degree. The programme is also accredited by The Geological Society of London. With an appropriate undergraduate degree, our Geological Society accreditation will reduce the amount of experience required to reach Chartered Geologist (CGeol) status.
The strengths of the degree programme here in Leeds include:
• A learning experience within an environment of active research;
• Good collaboration with industry, locally, nationally and internationally;
• Site visits and field courses to demonstrate engineering geology in practice and develop additional field skills appropriate to the subject area;
• Extensive communication, employment-related and team skills development;
• Excellent interaction with industry, e.g. Dissertation Projects in collaboration with practicing professionals;
• The valued contribution of colleagues from industry in aspects of course delivery;
• Introduction to state-of-the-art analytical and numerical approaches used in rock and soil engineering.
Students will be considered for the award of MSc Engineering Geology if they pass all 180 credits of modules and achieve an overall average mark of 50 or above, calculated across the 180 credits of modules.
Students who are not eligible for the award of MSc Engineering Geology will be considered for the unaccredited award of MSc Geological Studies. To be eligible for this award students must pass the 150 credits of modules (including any pass for progression modules) and achieve an overall average mark of 50 or above, calculated across the 180 credits of modules.
Students who are not eligible for these awards will be considered for the awards of Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) or Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert). Please review the University of Leeds Academic Regulations for further information on these awards.
This programme may include field activities. Should a planned destination be deemed unsafe or unviable, we will arrange appropriate alternative means for students to meet programme learning outcomes.
