Programme specification

The Postgraduate Programme in Clinical Education at the University of Leeds offers a part-time, blended learning opportunity tailored for health care practitioners in both educational roles and clinical practice. This innovative programme is designed to meet the unique needs of adult learners, providing an engaging and supportive environment that fosters professional growth and academic achievement.

Flexible Pathways for Diverse Needs:
The programme presents a flexible learning format with the possibility to access online study as well as face-to-face interactions, allowing you to balance your professional commitments while advancing your education. Students in the programme have the flexibility to choose between a campus-based pathway or an online-only pathway during Year 1. The campus-based pathway combines face-to-face sessions with online learning, catering to those who prefer in-person interaction or are local to the teaching location. The online pathway is designed for students who require a fully remote learning experience due to geographical, professional, or personal constraints. Pathway options are only available in Year 1.
In Years 2 and 3, the programme transitions to a unified structure, with all students following the same online format of delivery.

Students can enrol in the PgCert (campus-based or online), PgDip, or full MEd programme, offering flexibility to tailor their educational journey in clinical education

Formative Feedback: A Key to Success:
Formative feedback is a cornerstone of the programme and is woven throughout all stages of study. This approach enables students to refine their skills progressively, with regular opportunities for feedback on their teaching practices, research projects, and academic work. This includes both feedback on completed tasks and feedforward guidance to help shape future work and enhance learning outcomes. In addition, peer-to-peer feedback is actively encouraged, fostering collaborative learning and reflective practice. These opportunities for feedback and engagement ensure a well-rounded and supportive educational experience, empowering you to continuously refine your skills and achieve academic excellence.

Learning Experiences across programme levels:
• Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert): Students participate in micro-teaching sessions and receive direct observation of teaching in practice. These foundational activities are essential for developing reflective practice and teaching skills.
• Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip and Master’s Level (MEd): The focus shifts to practical research skills, peer reviews, and the critical engagement with educational theories. Students are encouraged to explore their role as educators and change agents within clinical and academic contexts.

Tailored Academic and Research Support:
The academic team provides extensive support for research skills and academic development. This includes tailored guidance for a small-scale empirical research projects unique to the student and preparing students for progression to doctoral studies, ensuring they achieve their full potential.

Research-Led Teaching and Strategic Alignment:
The academic leadership of this programme is closely aligned with the University of Leeds’ strategic vision and values. Our focus on research-led teaching ensures that you receive an inspirational educational experience that you can emulate in your clinical education context. Throughout the programme, you will engage with the principles of excellence in clinical education research, gaining insights into how they influence public policy and practice.

Core Values and Themes:
Core values of community, inclusiveness, integrity, and professionalism are embedded throughout the curriculum. Critical themes such as patient safety and public trust are revisited in the context of learning, teaching, and assessment, bridging academic theory with professional practice.

Multiprofessional and interdisciplinary lea rning:
The programme’s interdisciplinary nature draws on expertise from various clinical professions and academic disciplines. This multi-professional approach enhances the learning experience, providing students with a broad range of perspectives to inform their practice.

From Practitioner to Advocate:
As students progress, the programme transitions from focusing on individual teaching practices to broader leadership roles. Students develop the skills to critically appraise evidence-based teaching strategies, conduct empirical studies, and advocate for educational innovation within the healthcare sector.

Clinical Education Alumni Network:
The Clinical Education Alumni Network is a unique feature of the programme, supporting graduates in disseminating their research through conference presentations and publications. This network fosters ongoing professional development and strengthens the sense of community among alumni.
