BSc Environmental Science

Environmental science is at the forefront of tackling global challenges, from the conservation of species and combatting climate change, to developing renewable technologies and creating a sustainable future.
Our Environmental Science degree offers a thorough understanding of fundamental physics, chemistry and biology of the Earth’s environmental systems across a range of scales and will equip you with the knowledge and tools required to identify and solve the key environmental issues facing humankind.
Our wide range of expertise allows us to offer interdisciplinary insights into real-world environmental problems.
You’ll be trained in field and laboratory skills, including data collection and analysis. You'll be taught by practising experts and will get the opportunity to engage in frontier science through an independent research project during your final year. The programme is designed to provide flexible opportunities for interdisciplinary investigation of environmental problems affecting different environmental systems both locally and globally. This involves a balance of both theory and practice of environmental science.
This programme is designed to:
• Develop a broad understanding of the principles and methods of natural and social sciences as applied to environmental science issues;
• Provide opportunities for detailed analysis of contemporary theories of environmental system functioning, and their implications to environmental monitoring frameworks;
• Develop research skills to enable acquisition, interpretation and analysis of fieldwork, experimental and theoretical information to applied environmental science problems;
• Provide practical problem-solving experience of using environmental monitoring techniques, analysing data and communicating findings in a variety of forms.
Our graduates are well placed to enter employment or postgraduate education, with deep knowledge and valuable transferable and environmental skills.

The programme is suitable for students with a background in any scientific disciplines including Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geography, Geology, Maths, and/or Physics. An interest in environmental issues and a desire to improve knowledge of global environments is paramount.

Optional Modules

- Candidates who DO NOT have A level Maths grade A-C (or equivalent) are required to register for SOEE1481. Those DO who have A level Maths grade A-C are not permitted to register for SOEE1481.
- Candidates who DO NOT have A level Physics grade A-C (or equivalent) are required to register for SOEE1541. Those DO who have A level Physics grade A-C are not permitted to register for SOEE1541.
- Candidates who DO NOT have A level Chemistry grade A-C (or equivalent) are required to register for SOEE1135. Those DO who have A level Chemistry grade A-C are not permitted to register for SOEE1135.
Candidates not required to take some or all of SOEE1481, SOEE1541 and SOEE1135 should choose from SOEE1034, SOEE1302 and/or Discovery modules to make their credits up to 120. Candidates can select from the optional modules or Discovery modules to make up their credits for the year to 120.
Students with Pure or Further Maths at A level will need to discuss enrolment onto SOEE1302 and should consult the Programme and Module Leaders for advice.
